For the past few years, we have been rapidly getting into vegetable gardening. We have been members of a local CSA which has been wonderful, especially as they have done an great job training our children in the hows of gardening in Michigan's short but highly productive growing season. So far we have had great success with heirloom tomatoes, chard, peppers and various greens. Beans and cucumbers have been less successful due to heavy pruning from goats and a high leaping deer. This year we have also been blessed with a greenhouse/ cold frame for which we have built a base and bought cover. I hope to expand the growing season with lights, and have early greens as well as do my own tomato etc starts. We shall see.
As a side note, we also built a root cellar for winter storage of potatoes , carrots etc. It was wonderful last year, we had "fresh" potatoes through February, and frozen garden produce till March...Somehow it tastes better when it's your own!
